NFTs are everywhere. First minted by Quantum in 2014, NFTs skyrocketed in popularity following the release of CryptoPunks’ 2017 NFT digital art collection.

Wait, you don’t know what an NFT is?

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital identifiers that can’t be copied or altered. They’re created using code and recorded on a blockchain to prove authenticity and ownership. NFTs can represent real-world items, and in this instance, we’re talking about NFTs that represent digital art.

It’s estimated that there’s twice as many male cryptocurrency investors than women in the industry, with female NFT ownership further shrinking to a mere 16 percent. Right now though, there’s a whole community of women in crypto who are making an active difference. One of the biggest and successful NFT collections, Bored Ape Yacht Club, was designed by none other than female American artist Seneca.

In this article, you’ll learn all about the major women-led NFT crypto projects that are making a huge difference worldwide.

World of Women

World of Women (WoW) is a collection of over 10,000 unique NFT artworks of women from diverse backgrounds. Promoting an inclusive and accessible web3—the next iteration of the internet—WoW’s signature collection was so successful that they launched a second, Wow Galaxy, in 2021. Co-founder and artist Yam Karkai created the collection to increase diversity within the NFT space, onboarding the next generation of creators and to create equal opportunities for everyone.

World of Women has even been endorsed by celebrities like Reese Witherspoon, who recently announced a partnership between WoW and her media company, Hello Sunshine.

The Black Girl NFT

The Black Girl NFT collection was created to uplift black women all across the world—particularly young, black entrepreneurs pursuing their dreams and careers. The collection consists of 2500 hand-drawn artworks of black women with different traits and unique styles. Alana Simona created the collection to support all black women—showcasing their worth and beauty.

The NFTs are being released gradually on OpenSea, with periodic drops timed to match current trends and inspiration. Simona’s collection intentionally moves with the times to capture the essence of evolution within art and the community.

Future The Black Girl NFT plans include producing immersive community-building events in real life and in the metaverse.

Sad Girls Bar

Sad Girls Bar supports Women Side by Side, a peer support programme that's an alliance for women and girls at risk, delivered by charities Mind and Agenda. Sad Girls Bar recognises and highlights the conditions and risks caused by emotional burnout, and that’s why they’ve teamed up with Women Side by Side. Artist Glam Beckett created the 10,000-piece collection in 2021 and actively contributes a percentage of the NFT earnings to the programme.

Sad Girls Bar is an immersive experience with storytelling, amazing visuals, and creativity running throughout the project. There’s hope that Sad Girls Bar will expand into the metaverse.

Women Rise

Women Rise is a collection of NFTs created by artist, author, and neuroscience student Malihia Abidi. The 10,000-piece collection celebrates the diversity of women around the world, each with different features and backgrounds—activists, artists, coders, scientists and many, many more—rising together to make the world a better place and raising awareness.

The collection sold out in minutes upon its release in November 2021 and we expect to see more Women Rise NFTs in the near future.

The Flower Girls

The Flower Girls is a 10,000 piece collection handcrafted over four months by award-winning artist Varvara Alay. Each piece is algorithmically generated, with over 950 elements and 492778 ways to generate the face of a Flower Girl.

There are over 6 sextillion combinations in the collection making it one of the most unique NFT projects so far.

The Flower Girls are on a journey to the ancestry planet of all women: Venus. The mission includes supporting charitable causes, with 20 percent of both primary and secondary sales profits donated to a range of children’s charities.

A further five percent is used to collect children’s NFT art. The project is widely supported by celebrity figures, such as Brie Larson and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Boss Beauties

Boss Beauties’ mission is to educate and empower the next generation of women and girls through mentorship and scholarships. Their collection, Boss Beauties, is a 10,000-piece collection inspired by Gen Z change-makers from within the women in crypto community, designed to create equal opportunities both in the real world and online.

Each piece displays the beautifully diverse and empowered women Boss Beauties want to see and be in our world. The collection made history by selling out in just 90 minutes and became the first NFT collection featured on The New York Stock Exchange

With many more female-driven NFT collections set to populate the digital world, we’re moving towards a more accessible, inclusive, and equal web3 for all women in crypto. To do that, we need robust, reliable, and groundbreaking blockchain technology.
